Her eyes look so haunting... I started reading Jane Eyre a while ago but never got around to finishing it. Now I must go back and read it so I'll know what inspired this beautiful work of art!

I always love how artists use color choices in places I would never expect! Like in her face how there are slight tints of blue. It makes me rethink how I color and how I need to practice experimenting with more colors! :) The detail in the flames and torn curtains are amazing! Congrats <3 Well deserved!

Thank you so much for your comment!

I want you to study your face in the mirror or even just your hands in front of you. There are so many colors ranging from blue to purple to pink to green. It's so important as an artist to keep "looking" in order to create color choices you wouldn't think of otherwise. Don't be afraid to take chances! Jenny Saville is a famous contemporary painter who makes strong color decisions when painting flesh. I highly suggest viewing her work!

I haven't read the book, but your painting is great. Is she high on drugs? Her pupils are tiny like pinholes.

I knew it! As soon as I saw this image I thought "now she had to have been inspired by Jane Eyre". Have you read the Wide Sargasso Sea?

I'm very happy you recognized the inspiration! I have not read The Wide Sargasso Sea. I actually just heard of it very recently. I definitely need to pick it up when I have a chance!

I haven't read it yet. Just checked it out of the library. It's very short, less than 200 pages.

Yes! Jane Eyre is my favorite novel! This is actually a painting for a Bronte Exhibition being held in England. I'm very honored to have been invited to create paintings for the show. :)

Wow, that's incredible! I wish I could go see it, but unfortunately I live across the pond. :/

It's been seven years since I've read it. I only remember bits and pieces, but the two scenes that stand out in my mind are when Jane was locked in the [red?] room, and when Jane lays down with her best friend who is sick and dies before Jane wakes up in the morning... I'm curious to know what scenes will impact me most the next time I read it.

Speaking of Bronte sisters, my literature teacher and I were discussing the movies Jane Eyre (with Fassbender as Mr Rochester) and Wuthering Heights (with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff). I've never seen either, only read the books. Have you seen them? If so, what is your opinion of them?

haha I'm from the the US as well. That's why I'm so honored to be included! :D

Both of those scenes are quite climactic and vital to the novel as well as forming Jane's future character, so I can definitely see why they would stand out to you. :) Rochester's bed burning (with him in it!) always stood out to me as well.

I've seen the Jane Eyre film with Fassbender as Mr. Rochester; however, I haven't seen any film versions of Wuthering Heights (though my grandmother keeps telling me to watch the original, black and white film). I definitely suggest watching the BBC mini series for Jane Eyre. The new film was beautiful and the actors chosen were spot on; however, it just didn't do it for me like I had expected (considering how excited I was to see it!). The beginning was wonderful when Jane is young...but I felt they focused too much on the love story and too quickly. I understand it's a film so the writers had to pick and choose (the book is pretty long and so many things happen after all), but I wanted something different I guess. My mother and sister (who both adore historical/historical fiction films) watched the new version of Jane Eyre with me, and they didn't like it and had a hard time following it. You should try watching it! I'd like to know your thoughts as well. :)

Wow, that's so cool! :D

Funny- I don't remember that scene with Mr Rochester. XD Then again, I wasn't interested in the love story at the time. :P

I shall have to watch all of those, though right now our household is watching the Olympics all hours of the day. XP
